1980's Crome Plated Ross Hi-Tech Mountain Bike Single Speed Conversion. I believe, although I'm not certain, that this is the Mt. Hood model. Frame seat tube measures 23 inches from center of bottom bracket to top of seat tube, seat tube measures 55cm from center of bottom bracket to center of top tube. The top tube measures 59cm from the center of the seat tube to the center of the head tube. Frame has 4130 Chromoly sticker on it. 126mm rear dropout spacing. The forks are Tange Hi-Tensile. The frame has light signs of rust leaking through where tubes are welded together, but no major pitting and very little, if any, signs of pitting at all. There is a small dent on the seat tube about halfway down, can be seen in the picture with arrow. When inserting the seatpost it is a tight fit, but I’m certain it’s the right size, the seatpost is scratched up from being inserted. The 350mm seatpost can only be inserted so far at the moment because a braze-on located on the seat tube for a shoulder carrying strap blocks the seatpost from being fully inserted. The frame seems straight otherwise and in good condition considering the vintage.
The crank was originally a Sakae CR triple, but I converted it to a single speed, I left the 48T chainring on the original Sakae drive side crank arm. The non-drive side crank arm was unfortunately damaged and bottoming out when securing it to the bottom bracket spindle, I replaced it with what I believe is a Sugino VP crank arm, it works well and both arms are 175mm. Sturmey Archer freewheel 17T and KMC chain, both are newer with low mileage. I replaced the bottom bracket with a Shimano cartridge one a couple years ago and it’s in good operating condition, I did see some light rust on the spindle between the arm and the cup, but nothing major. The pedals were removed from a Trek 1000 and seem to be of good quality, I believe they are cartridge bearing after quick inspection, they spin smoothly but seem a bit loose as there is some play, they need adjusting.
The brakes are Dia-Compe 980 I believe with some nice Dia-Compe levers. The brakes do have some corrosion and rust visible in areas, on the springs and nuts that secure the pads. The exposed brake cables, including the straddle cable, show signs of weathering as well. The brakes function well and have Kool Stop pads.
The wheels are original to the bicycle. Maillard hubs with solid nutted axles, 36 hole laced to Weinmann 26” x 1.75 rims, matching front and rear. The hubs are due for a cleaning and repack with fresh grease. ***The front axle and nuts seem to be having an issue.*** They don’t thread on smoothly, but I don’t see any damage to the threads, I’m unfamiliar with the axle, but it has machined flat spots on it. I’ve been able to get the wheel secured and I’ve ridden it that way for years without issue. The hubs spin freely and fairly smooth given the age and quality.
The wheels are relatively true given the vintage. I rebuilt them a few years back and they’ve held the position I set, but there is only so much you can do with used wheel parts. Trued ensuring even and proper max tension, radial and lateral, spoke wind up released, stress relieved, linseed oil on the spoke threads, oiled the nipples, did the best I could with what is there. Bontrager Connection Trail tires 26 x 2.0 in great condition, low mileage. Fairly certain there are flat protection strips inside the tires.
SKS fenders in good condition, some of the mounting hardware show rust, but are easily replaced. The original bullmoose handlebars are in good condition with some signs of light rust popping through near the welds, the same as the frame. Oury grips are in decent shape, one of them has a slight tear in the end due to being leaned against a wall. The Fizik Vittese Sport saddle is in good condition, there are a few scuffs towards the rear which is common on these. I will include the original shoulder frame mounted carrying strap, minus the hardware.
