Comes from private collection of longtime collector here locally in Portland, OR. In exceptional condition, an identical piece sold at auction in 2009 and many others on record. Hand signed in pencil is very rare. View all photos.
"Born in Friendly Cove, British Columbia in 1876, Jimmy John was a well-known and well-liked Nootka artist who began carving in the early 20th century. He was once the chief of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Yuquot) tribe of the Western edge and Islands of Vancouver and a carver of totem poles, masks and silver jewelry. He died in Nanaimo in 1988 at the age of 112."
