Description
Born in 1935, Judy Cranmer graduated with honours in 1956 from the Vancouver School of Art in graphic design. She started out with freelance silkscreen printing and fabric design, later moving on to pottery and graphic design.
Her interest in Northwest Coast native art developed from close personal contact with First Nations artists during her formative years as a potter.
Judy was (unofficially) the second wife of Doug Cranmer, a Kwakwaka'wakw artist.
The distinctive Northwest Coast design elements characteristic of her pottery represent an extensive knowledge of traditional native culture and design.
Many of Cranmer's pottery pieces derive their form and design from Northwest Coast ceremonial feast dishes, bowls and bentwood boxes.
'I have always been intrigued by the designs applied to a variety of traditional objects of the Northwest Coast such as dance blankets, baskets and painted wooden containers. As a potter and graphic designer, I have endeavoured to go a step further and adapt the classic formline elements to the medium of clay.'
Judy Cranmer died in 2007 (Artist's Biography)
