Argillite, sometimes called "black slate", is unique to Haida Gwaii and occurs at a quarry on Slatechuck Mountain in the upper basin of Slatechuck Creek, near the town of Skidegate on Graham Island. The Haida have a monopoly on use of the argillite. This artwork is of high quality and prized around the world since the Haida first began carving. The journey to the argillite deposit is a treacherous hike, and is accessible by the Haida people. It is recognizable by its black pigment and shiny exterior when carved. When unpolished, argillite is rough and matte.
The Haida carvings of (Haida Gwaii) along the coast of British Columbia are notable aboriginal art treasures and hghly collected worldwide.
